Throughout The Years At Sugar Plum Bakery
History Timeline:
1985: Sugar Plum Bakery incorporated as a non profit organization after receiving a grant award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration on Developmental Disabilities. (200 grants were awarded from 2200 applications submitted) Many business ideas were considered but the bakery idea not only met the criteria for a market need it also provided various skill levels and employment opportunities in a business which would produce everything it sold every day. Additional financial support was provided by many private foundations, businesses and organizations such as Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), Knights of Columbus (KOVAR), Norfolk Foundation (now the Hampton roads foundation), Parsons Foundation, City of Virginia Beach, banks and others. Sugar Plum Bakery became a real community project with assistance from the community.
1987: October 10, Sugar Plum Bakery opened its doors for business.
1990: Vended by the state of Virginia as a provider of Rehabilitative Services. Began offering employment services for individuals qualifying for DARS services including: Situational assessments, work adjustment training, and supported employment job development services
2001: A campaign was launched to build a new Sugar Plum Bakery
2002: Construction for the new building began
2003: May 6: 1st annual golf tournament and opened new facility
2006: Partnered with Medicaid to offer prevocational services for seven individuals receiving Medicaid Waiver
2011: Constructed a new entrance with automatic doors with funds granted from Amerigroup Foundation
2012: Sugar Plum Bakery celebrates 25 years
2014: Beazley Foundation awarded a grant for a new front entrance
2016: Group Supported Employment and Individual supported Employment Services provided for individuals who receive Medicaid waiver.
2017: October 10 Sugar Plum Bakery Celebrates 30 Years
